The Indian 10-Point Grading System

Everything you need to know about SGPA, CGPA, grade points, and percentage conversion in the Indian education system.

Last updated: September 2026

What is the 10-Point Grading System?

The University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) to standardize higher education grading in India.

This system uses letter grades mapped to grade points on a 10-point scale, providing a more uniform evaluation metric across institutions.

It has been adopted by most central, state, and deemed universities across India, aligning with AICTE guidelines for engineering colleges and technical institutes.

How SGPA is Calculated

The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is a measure of academic performance in a single semester.

SGPA = Σ(Ci × GPi) / ΣCi

Where Ci = credits for course i, and GPi = grade point for course i.

Worked Example

  • Course 1: Mathematics (4 credits, Grade A = 8 GP) 32
  • Course 2: Physics (3 credits, Grade A+ = 9 GP) 27
  • Course 3: English (2 credits, Grade B+ = 7 GP) 14
  • Course 4: Lab (2 credits, Grade O = 10 GP) 20
  • Total (93 / 11) 8.45 SGPA

How CGPA is Calculated

The Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is a measure of overall academic performance across all completed semesters.

CGPA = Σ(Si × SGPAi) / ΣSi

Where Si = total credits in semester i, and SGPAi = SGPA of semester i.

Note: CGPA is NOT the simple average of SGPAs; it is weighted by the total credits of each semester.

Worked Example

  • Sem 1: 22 credits, SGPA 8.2 180.4
  • Sem 2: 24 credits, SGPA 7.8 187.2
  • Sem 3: 23 credits, SGPA 8.5 195.5
  • Total (563.1 / 69) 8.16 CGPA

CGPA to Percentage Conversion

Different universities use different formulas to convert CGPA into a percentage. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • CBSE / General: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
  • VTU: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
  • Anna University: Percentage = CGPA × 10
  • Mumbai University: Percentage = 7.1 × CGPA + 11

Always verify the formula with your specific university, as conversion methods may vary even within the same state.

University-Specific Variations

  • VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University): Uses its own grade scale; some branches have different credit structures.
  • Anna University: Credits range from 1-5, uses a standard 10-point scale.
  • AKTU (Abdul Kalam Technical University): Follows AICTE guidelines closely.
  • DU (Delhi University): Adopted CBCS since 2015, using the standard UGC scale.
  • Mumbai University: Features its own unique percentage conversion formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CGPA the same as GPA?
CGPA refers specifically to the cumulative average in the Indian system across semesters, while GPA is a more general term for grading in a specific term or overall.
What is a good CGPA?
An 8+ is generally considered very good, and 9+ is excellent. However, context matters based on the university and course difficulty.
Can I improve my CGPA?
Yes, you can improve your CGPA through better grades in future semesters. High-credit courses have a more significant impact on your overall CGPA.
What happens if I fail a subject?
An 'F' grade (0 GP) pulls down your SGPA. Most universities allow a re-examination or supplementary exam to clear the backlog and improve the grade.
Is the 10-point system used everywhere in India?
It is used by most central and state universities under UGC/AICTE guidelines. However, some older institutions or autonomous bodies might still use the percentage system.
How do I convert my Indian CGPA for international applications?
It's best to use official evaluation services like WES or Scholaro. A rough conversion to a 4.0 scale is often calculated as: (CGPA * 9.5 / 100) * 4.0.
What is CBCS?
CBCS stands for Choice Based Credit System. It allows students to choose electives and earn credits across different disciplines, offering more flexibility.
How are grace marks handled?
This varies by university. Typically, grace marks are added to the final mark before the grade assignment, helping a student pass a subject.
